I got a phone call from a buddy who needed his 2002 Forester's (EJ251 SOHC) water pump and timing belt done, so I told him no problem I can help him out.
From start to finish it took my 1.5 hours, probably a new record. Hardest part was getting the new tensioner in and lining up the water pump. But those non-turbo SOHC motors have so much more free space in the motor to work with when the timing covers are off and the radiator is out.
Here is a picture of a thing for your time.

It was actually pretty fun, mostly because it was extremely easy and not a frustrating job.

I love the NA sohc motors. No need to remove the tmic to do any work, radiator gives you plenty of space to get to the belts, and the wiring and hoses are much more simpler and easier to get to. Oh, sparkplugs are possible too, which is the best part.

That's impressive.
I'm considering a Forester as a new (to us) vehicle for my wife. What years did they use the SOHC?

It's a good thing isn't it?

Up until 2010 I believe they used SOHC motors in Foresters.
EJ251 in 00-02 and EJ253 in 99, 03-10. Weird right?
